St. Mary's Bay Newfoundland

St. Mary's Bay is an inlet of the Atlantic in southeast Newfoundland - on the south coast of the Avalon Peninsula, 50 mi / 80 km SW of St. John's.

The branch of Erica Kenny's family tree affiliated with this area of Newfoundland is the Butland family. Mary Butland was the wife of Thomas Evoy of O'Donnel's, SMB. Their son (first name unknown) married Dorothy Nichol of Nicholsville, NL.

(One hamlet in St. Mary's Bay is called 'Mosquito.' One can guess the probable origin of the name. Other small villages include the fishing settlements of North Harbour, Riverhead, Salmonier and Mussel Pond (the original name for O'Donnell's.)

St. Mary's Bay is 64 km (25 miles) long, 40 km (25 mi) wide at the entrance and is situated at 46°55'N 53°45'W. It contains the Colinet Islands.

I have not find any direct connections to Mary Butland as yet, but there are, to be sure, several Butland families in the area (see below).

For example, In Mussel Pond, McAlpine's 1898 Directory (of Placentia & St. Mary's District) include the names

BUTLAND Jas fisherman
BUTLAND Stephen fisherman
BUTLAND Joseph fisherman
